Malaga airport to Estepona

Carol wrote in this week: "Hi Mike, is there a direct public bus service from Malaga airport to Estepona? If not what is my best option arriving on a Sunday afternoon and how much will it cost me?

I wrote back to Carol saying: "It's easy to get to Estepona from Malaga airport. First take the special bus from Malaga airport to Marbella bus station. At the moment it costs just under €4.50 one way.
Travelling in June, you will need to look at the column for winter departures from the airport. If you are travelling in July, look at the summer departures column.

Then when you get to the Marbella bus station after you get your luggage off the bus from the airport buy your ticket for Estepona from the ticket office in the Marbella bus station. There is an electronic board announcing departures in the departures hall and the board gives you the number of the bay where the bus is standing so you just look for the Estepona bus and also check on the windscreen before you get on. Here is a list of bus schedules for the route, look for the MARBELLA - ESTEPONA bus schedules. In June of 2009 this journey costs €2.58.

If you are getting off at an intermediate stop before Estepona, like Paula who has just written in, then this
list of bus stops between Marbella and Estepona will be useful. Tell the ticket office clerk where you are getting off because it might be a little cheaper if your intermediate stop falls in a different zone. As you get on the bus tell the driver where you are getting off.

YOu will see that there are two buses every hour and so for less than €10 you will get all the way to Estepona from Malaga airport.

Check out all the information above and timings and compare them with your arrival time too. If anything doesn't make sense or you need some extra information, write back to me on the blog contact form below.

Best wishes from Marbella Carol and Paula and thanks again for your contact" Mike

Update 09/10/10: There is now a direct bus service connecting Malaga airport with Estepona bus station. Check across on the Costa del Sol buses page for details.

Hello Anne

Thank you for writing in all the way from Munich. Here is the Portillo bus timetable showing services from Estepona to Marbella. As you know, in Marbella you connect with the bus from Marbella bus station to Malaga airport. Copy and paste this URL into your browser:

Here is the Gomarbella page showing the Portillo bus timetable from Marbella bus station to Malaga airport:

If you put the two timetables together you will see if you can get to the airport on time. If you tell me your flight time, I can have a look also. If the timetables don't look promising, I will help you with other suggestions.

Best wishes from Marbella Anne, I hope this helps you and thanks again for writing.

Hi Mike!
Myself and 2 girlfriends are travelling to Bena Vista and im a bit of an over anxious traveller in foreign countries due to my terrible language skills, so i just want some clarification to stop me fretting!

We plan to get the coach from malaga airport to marbella bus station, and then the Estepona bus to the bena vista stop.

Your page on the bena vista bus stop is brilliant, but we just wanted to know:
1. how easy the marbella to estepona bus is when it comes to big bags,
2. if the buses are like english ones when you have to press a bell when your stops comming up, or if you just tell the bus driver which stop you want when you get on and they definatley stop there?! and also,
3. roughly how long does it take from marbella to bena vista?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Lexi, thanks very much for writing in and I'm glad the Benavista page has helped your travels.

I didn't reply immediately because this morning I went up to the Marbella bus station to check on suitcases and bags travelling in the bus or in the luggage compartment below. The girl in the ticket office didn't know the answer but asked a colleague who looked like a bus driver and he pointed upwards meaning the bags have to go on the bus and not under. Perhaps one of you gets onto the bus and then the other two pass the suitcases up.

No problem with this however on the Malaga airport to Marbella bus because there is lots and lots of space in the luggage compartment. If you can't get your luggage on comfortably from the passenger entrance side, then take it round to the other side which is not used so much.

Yes, when you want to get off, push the button to request a stop. It's normally on one of the vertical support bars near the exit. There are always passengers getting on and off at Benavista so you should be OK. Tell the driver when you get on in Marbella and then one of you can walk up the bus aisle and check with the driver "Bena Vista?" .

A safer way to work out when you arrive at Bena Vista than watching the time will be to count the bus stops after San Pedro de Alcantará. If you look at the list of bus stops between Marbella and Estepona at the bottom of the Bena Vista page, then Bena Vista will be the fifth stop after San Pedro, it's at the end of a long straight and you'll see the pink buildings coming into view on your right. I would allow about 40 minutes but rather watch for the stop than look at your watch! The traffic and passengers getting on and off will affect the bus speed.

I hope that helps Lexi, I'm sure everything will work out just fine!

Best wishes from Marbella
