Grand Costa del Sol Hotel

Clare Adams wrote to me:

Hi Mike I'm trying to plan a fab holiday to Spain in July, I'm trying to book into Gran Costa Del Sol Hotel in Mijas, it looks fantastic but I'm trying to figure out the buses and not having much luck, I've no Spanish and never been to Spain... can you help? My flight arrives (I hope) lunchtime so I have daytime to travel :) ) Thanks Clare

I wrote back to Clare:

Hi Clare, thank you very much for writing in. I hope you manage to make your booking OK. The Gran Costa del Sol has a great location in Mijas Costa, it's easy to get to.

When you arrive at Malaga airport, take the train all the way from Malaga train station to Fuengirola at the end of the line. It's about a 40 minute trip around €3, really good value. From the Fuengirola train station walk one block to the Fuengirola bus station and then take the bus which goes to Marbella, there are two buses every hour. When you buy your ticket just say "La Cala de Mijas."

It'll be a 20 to 25 minute journey.  When you get off the bus at the La Cala de Mijas bus stop, you can walk to the Gran Costa del Sol Hotel. If it's very hot, you could even take a taxi, it will be a minimum taxi fare not more than €6 but it's very walkable.  I'll tell you what, make your booking and then write back and I'll help you with getting from the Mijas Costa bus stop to the hotel.

Here's another link to help you find your way easily from Fuengirola to La Cala de Mijas by bus.

Have a read of everything Clare and let me know if you have any doubts. Best wishes and thanks for writing in Mike

PS: I took the photo above this afternoon from a terrace in the Alamar apartments complex looking down on La Cala de Mijas. On the right you can see the Gran Costa del Sol Hotel right on the beach. On the left of the picture, you can see a long red roof tucked into the curve of the A7 (N340) coastal road. The La Cala de Mijas bus stops are next to the red roof. On second thoughts, on a hot day if you are pulling a suitcase, a taxi from the taxi rank next to the bus stops would be more comfortable. With all the money you have saved on the train to Fuengirola and the bus to La Cala, you can afford €6 (2012)  to arrive in style!

Hi Mike, Can you recommend a local travel company based on the Costa del Sol that does day trips to Gibraltar - the sort that picks up and drops off along the coast on the way there and back, and drives right into Gib. Thanks Rachael

Hi Rachael, thank you for writing in. We always use Viajes Valemar,Avda Ricardo Soriano, 64 29601 Marbella, 952 829 944 in Marbella for bookings that we don't make ourselves. They have helped a lot of other visitors to the coast to book day trips to Morocco, Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada and of course Gibraltar.

Email Leonor del Toro at and tell her Mike Drury recommended using Viajes Valemar. It's not that I earn anything from the mention but she will know you are serious and instead of having to go to her to pay a deposit, she may let you pay everything on the bus.

She'll tell you the Gibraltar visit days and if you tell her where you are staying at the same time, she'll tell you the closest pick up point and the time that the bus passes.

See how that goes Rachael and please let me know if I can help further, thanks very much again for writing in. Best wishes from Marbella Mike

Hi Mike. We are arriving on 11th June to stay at the Trh Mijas in Mijas Costa. This will be our first visit to the area and would appreciate some advice from you as to the best way to reach the hotel. We are planning to travel from the airport to Fuengirola by train then catch a bus to Mijas Costa. Can you advise on bus number and stop to get off in Mijas Costa and whether we will be best to get a taxi to the hotel once we arrive at the bus stop.

Thanks in advance

Hi Colin, thank you very much for writing in. Just one thing, the TRH Mijas Hotel is in Mijas Pueblo (Mijas Village) up on the slopes of the mountain behind Fuengirola. The Mijas urbanisation covers an enormous area from Mijas Pueblo on the mountain down to Mijas Costa (Mijas Coast).

So you will need to catch the Mijas Pueblo bus which will trundle you up the hill to the very centre of Mijas Village. The bus leaves Fuengirola bus station next to the train station.

If I remember correctly, the bus from Fuengirola to Mijas Pueblo passes the TRH hotel on the left after the climb is finished and it swings left into Mijas village but it is a narrow road and there is no bus stop in front. From the main bus stop in Mijas Pueblo you could walk back to the hotel if your suitcases are not too heavy but I suggest taking a taxi from the rank right next to the bus stop for a minimum fare of a few euros.

Here's the TRH Hotel address:

The TRH Hotel Mijas
Urbanización de Tamisa, 2
29650 Mijas, España

And here's a link which will give you some information about buses to Mijas Pueblo.

Have a great stay Colin and don't hesitate to ask any more questions. Best wishes from Marbella Mike
